The Reformer: A Short Dive into History

At Anjos Pilates, we see the Reformer as more than equipment. It is a transformative tool. In a city that is constantly moving like Lisbon, many bodies are doing the opposite: sitting, stiffening, and slowly losing their natural movement patterns. This is one of the problems Joseph Pilates set out to solve.

The word reform means to improve, restore and to bring into better condition. That idea sits at the heart of Anjos Pilates; restoring the body to move the way it was designed to move.

Why the Reformer Exists

Joseph Pilates believed that when natural movement declines, overall function declines with it. Instead of creating another fitness trend, quick fix, or therapy, he designed a complete exercise system. His goal was simple but ambitious: retrain the body to move efficiently again.

While mat exercises were foundational, he quickly recognized a limitation. Many people struggled to perform them correctly without assistance. At the same time, resistance based training was gaining popularity. His response was innovative. He developed apparatus, a term he used interchangeably with machine, that would guide and refine movement.

In a 1946 interview, he explained his reasoning clearly:

“Of course you can exercise without machines. But it’s not as efficient, it would take longer. With them, three or four hours work a week is enough.”

Efficiency was key. Modern movement science supports this thinking. When we move against resistance, the nervous system adapts faster. External load accelerates coordination, strength development, and neuromuscular learning. In other words, the body learns new patterns more quickly.

This is why Reformer Pilates in cities like Lisbon has become one of the most effective and sought after ways to practice Pilates today.

What Makes the Reformer So Effective?

The Reformer uses springs to create consistent and precise resistance. Unlike weights, the springs demand engagement throughout the entire range of motion. They do not switch off. They require attention.

Joseph Pilates once described the apparatus like this:

“I invented all these machines. I thought, why use my strength? So I made a machine to do it for me. Look, you see it resists your movement in just the right way so those long inner muscles really have to work against it. That is why you can concentrate on movement.”

That resistance provides constant feedback. It teaches the body where it is in space, also known as proprioception, and keeps the muscles active from start to finish. If focus drifts, the springs respond immediately. They do not allow passive movement.

At Anjos Pilates, we often explain it simply.

The Reformer becomes your teacher.

It encourages:

  • Full body integration
  • Length and lift through the spine
  • Balanced muscular opposition
  • Control under resistance
  • Deep concentration

The carriage only moves if you move it well.

Beyond Exercise: Re-Education

In technical terms, the Reformer improves movement efficiency by providing a guided pathway for the body. The carriage creates a clear trajectory. The springs close the kinetic chain. The resistance accelerates neural adaptation.

In everyday language, it helps you move "better".

In a modern urban environment, especially for those living and working in Lisbon, that matters more than ever. Long hours at desks, time spent commuting, and repetitive patterns all impact posture and joint health. It's is not just about fitness. It is about restoring functional movement.

The Role of the Instructor

While the apparatus is powerful, its true potential depends on intelligent instruction. A skilled instructor understands:

  • How the dimensions of the Reformer influence biomechanics
  • How spring tension affects muscular recruitment
  • How to guide the dialogue between body and machine

That is precisely why only highly qualified and experienced teachers instruct at Anjos Pilates. This is also the reason why we keep our class sizes so small. Our priority is to give each student individualised attention and feedback, should they require, on the Reformer and on the mat. This is simply less likely to be the case in studios with many Reformers or dozens of mats. Our goal is to give you the most value from your Pilates practice by adjusting, modifying and learning things at your pace.

From the moment your feet press into the footbar to the second you step off the carriage, there is constant communication between nervous system and resistance.

At Anjos Pilates, our approach to Reformer Pilates in Lisbon is based on that understanding. We use the Reformer not simply to strengthen, but to refine, helping each client rediscover efficient movement according to their needs.
