What’s the Difference Between the Mat and Reformer?

What’s the Difference Between the Mat and Reformer?

If you’ve ever searched for pilates inLisbon, you’ve probably come across two main options: pilates mat and pilates reformer.

In our small pilates studio in Lisbon, many clients ask us the same question:

“Which pilates class should I choose, Mat or Reformer?”

But in reality you don’t have to choose. Both class types come with immense benefits. But understanding the difference helps you get the most out of your practice.

The Foundation: Pilates Mat

The pilates mat method is where everything begins. It’s the original system created by Joseph Pilates; a sequence of 34 classical exercises that focus on core strength, control, breathing, and spinal mobility.

In a Mat-based pilates class, your body is the resistance. There are no springs or straps. That’s what makes it both accessible and quite challenging.

Start with Mat because:

  • It feels familiar (similar to yoga or fitness classes)
  • It requires minimal equipment
  • It builds a strong technical foundation
  • It’s adaptable for all levels

But don’t mistake Mat for “beginner Pilates.” Without the support of equipment, your muscles must stabilise and control every movement. It demands focus, strength, and awareness.

At our Lisbon pilates studio, we love Mat work because it gives you an incredible foundation.

The Pilates Reformer at Anjos Pilates

The Dynamic Option: Pilates Reformer

Now let’s talk about the machine everyone is raves about, the pilates reformer.

You’ve likely seen images of the sleek carriage, springs, straps, and footbar.

The Reformer adds resistance through adjustable springs, creating a powerful combination of strength training and controlled movement. Unlike traditional weightlifting, though, the reformer trains your muscles to work in harmony not isolating or overloading one area.

A pilates reformer session can feel:

  • Athletic
  • Fluid
  • Challenging
  • Surprisingly intense

The moving carriage provides feedback  helping you understand alignment and control in a way that’s harder to feel on the Mat. This mind-body connection is what makes it addictive.

So, What’s the Real Difference?

Here’s the simple breakdown:

Pilates Mat

  • Uses bodyweight resistance
  • Focuses deeply on control and stability
  • Accessible and foundational
  • Excellent for building core strength

Pilates Reformer

  • Uses spring resistance
  • Adds support and challenge
  • Offers more variety of positions
  • Enhances strength, mobility, and coordination

Both follow the same principles: breath, precision, flow, and control. In fact, many exercises, like the Hundred or Leg Circles, exist in both formats.

The difference isn’t better or worse. It’s about experience and sensation.
